The Markonia Award helps eligible young Barbadians cover the practical costs of starting at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology.

Built around the first year.

The first year of further education is often the hardest financially and the most decisive personally. The Markonia Award is built around that year — meeting students at the door of opportunity and helping them cross it.

What it can fund

Practical costs, covered.

Who it supports

Young Barbadians aged 16–18 entering SJPI from two partner schools.

  • Aged 16–18 at the time of application.
  • Citizen of Barbados.
  • Former student of Princess Margaret Secondary School or Springer Memorial Secondary School.
  • Applying to the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI).

    Use the contact form to tell us about you and your plans for SJPI.

    Submit your application

    When you apply to SJPI, also apply for a Markonia Award and include your recommendation letter.

    Receive support

    Eligible students receive funds towards tuition, books, uniforms and equipment for first year.

When can I apply?

You can apply when you are making your first application to the SJPI. You can also register your interest using the contact form and we will be in touch.

Does the Award cover all costs?

The Award is designed to help with first-year tuition fees, books, uniforms and equipment. It is not intended to cover all costs of study.

Do I need a recommendation letter?

Yes. A recommendation letter from a teacher, head of year, or community leader who knows your work is part of the application.

Can I apply if I attended a different secondary school?

Currently the Award is open to former students of Princess Margaret Secondary School and Springer Memorial Secondary School. We expect to broaden eligibility over time.

If I donate in pound sterling what is it worth?

In Barbados £1 = $2.65 and that rate fluctuates daily. The average FT course at SJPI in 2026, ranged from $325 - $400 BDS per year.
